Natural Laundry Detergents

Its so difficult to find a mild laundry detergent in Malaysia that i am seriously considering making my own or just using water except for tough stains. I recently tried a locally manufactured     "natural" laundry detergent and found my clothes laden with soap residue after every wash cycle.

Apart from the local detergent above, the only other product available in stores, actually just one store (Village Grocer) in the city is Earth Choice. This product comes from Australia and it cost close to RM18 or USD5 a bottle approximately. It lasts a month (for one person) hence needless to say you will be spending a lot if you have a family! A 750 ml bottle of Earth Choice can rinse up to 21 washes or so they say.

I have been using it for 6 months and have no complains so far.  The label says its a plant based formula. Readiliy Biodegradable Surfactants. No petrochemical Surfactants, Phosphate, Ammonia or Chlorine. Reduces Chemical Waste & Pollutants. Low Sodium (6%). Septic Safe. No added Phosphorus.

For more information please visit www.natureorganics.com.au. I know some of my friends use just a little bit of Dettol to wash clothes instead of detergents and fabric softeners. Perhaps I should experiment with making my own detergents and see how that works out.

E2 Energy Saver

I came across an interesting gadget at a Home Dec exhibition last month. The gadget in question is called E2 Saver. This gadget claims to be able to reduce your utility bill by 40%. You simply need to plug into any 13A 3-pin power outlet nearest to your distribution box.

The friendly salesman also highlighted that E2 Energy saver will
- Stabilise the flow of current into the building
- Improve power efficiency
- Reduce temperature of wire and risk of fire
- Prolong the lifespan of electrical appliances

Would love to hear from anyone who has actually purchased the E2 Saver and get some feedback/reviews in this product. It cost between RM300 to RM400 approximately and is available Handy Fix Sdn Bhd, Houz Depot Sdn Bhd, Ace Hardware Sdn Bhd, Home-Fix (M) Sdn Bhd.

The salesman also showed me a reduction in utility bills as a result of E2 Saver but that could be due to a variety of reason. I also googled E2 Saver Scam to see if anything came up from other websites or blogs. What I found was this product has been in the market for couple of years and has been getting mixed reviews from customers.

At one of the forums a user pointed out how E2 Saver works:
1. Inside all of these boxes are just industrial non polar capacitors. You can get it at electronics shop for ~RM5 each.
2. The capacitors will indeed filter out the noise in electrical current, and thus making your total power reduced. This is because:
Total Power = Real Power + Reactive Power
The cap reduces reactive power.
3. Old TNB meters (those with spinning discs, measures TOTAL POWER), so if your house is still using that type of meter, using the caps will help to reduce your bill to a certain point. (especially if you use a lot of aircons/washing machines)
4. The NEW DIGITAL TNB meters is already designed to measure REAL POWER ONLY. So, TNB does not charge you for any reactive power that you use anymore (true for houses only, but for factories, tnb still charge for reactive power under a certain level of Power Factor).

I am not sure if the above explanation is true and frankly i didn't know we had something called reactive power. Finally, E2 Saver does have a credible websites as more often than not these gadgets appear on website that look rather suspicious. I am rather skeptical about the whole gadget thats sounds too good to be true and you know what they say when things are too good to be true...

Favourite Robin Sharma Quotes

Always remember the key principle to the quality of life is the quality of communicatiom. This means the way you communicate with others and more importantly the way you communicate with yourself. What you focus on is what you get. If you look for the positive this is what you get. This is the fundamental law of nature.

Stress is simply a response you create in the interpretation of an event. Understand that the perceived negative effect of an event or task may be mentally manipulated and conditioned towards the positive.

Remember that forgiveness is a virtue that few develop, but one that is most important to maintaining peace of mind. By using emotional forgiveness muscles more regularly, petty wrongs, remarks and slights will not touch you and nothing will penetrate your concentrated self.

Never argue with the person you work for you will lose more than the argument

Two of the fundamentals for a happy joyful life is balance and moderation. One must maintain a balance of all activities and do nothing to extreme

Remember that effective time management makes you more rather than less flexible. It allows you to do the things you really want to do rather than the things you have to do.

Spend time with Nature. It has a powerful effect on your senses which will lead to a sense of renewal, refreshment and peacefulness. Cultivate a friendship in Nature and you will find more serenity, contentment and richness in your life.

Sound body rest a sound mind. Feed it the finest fuel, exercise daily and care for as you would your prized possession.

Remember an ancient Indian proverb: "If you conquer your mind, you conquer the world"
Keep your words soft and arguments hard

When you look for something you will find it. If you constantly expect exceptional success you will surely have it. Peak performers attract success. You must keep the goals you desire to achieve at the forefront of your mind throughout the day.

Get deep into the habit of personal introspection. Spend ten minutes every night before you go to bed in self-examination. Think about the good things you did during the day and the bad actions you may have taken which you must change in order to excel and grow.

Remember the power of prayer

When the breath is still and strong, so is the mind

Fill your home with bright fresh flowers. This is one of the best investment you can make. Let the sound of great music, laughter and good fun fill the oasis of your home

The mind is like a garden-as you sow, so shall you reap. When you cultivate it and nurture it, it will blossom beyond your wildest expectation. But if you let the weeds take over, you will never reach your potential. What you put in is what you get out.

List of Organic Farmers In Malaysia as at May 2012

I thought it might be useful to list all certified organic farmers under Skim Organic Malaysia. This will help you identify certified organic farmers amongst the rest when grocery shopping. The names below were extracted from the SOM website. I also noticed a lot of organic farmers had not renewed their certification. As such the list here are farmers/suppliers with valid certification only

1. DQ Farm Products - Durian
2. Zenxin Agri Organic - Vegetables
3. Nasaha Enterprise Sdn Bhd - Herbs
4. Golden Meridien Sdn Bhd - Local Fruits

Lemon Water

One of the things I have been incorporating into my list of daily must-dos is to drink lemon water. I first became aware of lemon water when i was diagnosed with cancer and my aunt suggested I have a cup of lemon juice at least once a week. Now I cut a few slices of lemon on throw it into my drinking water . It taste strange at first but you get accustom to it after awhile.

So why lemons? Lemons mixed with water creates a beverage when imbibed, helps raise the body's PH level. Lemon juice when metabolised, is alkalizing and therefore can balance out the acidic body. You don't want to be acidic as this makes you susceptible to falling ill, feeling fatigue, etc

Lemon water also stimulates digestion and relieves heartburn and bloating. I suffer from bloating if i have eaten food that is acidic. Now i sip lemon water after a meal and it has helped to alleviate bloating.

Drinking freshly made fruit juice or lemon water first thing in the morning is a great habit to incalculate. Please do not drink lemon juice in its concentrate form as i tried this once and got a tummy ache. So always dilute in water!

A word of caution as lemon is alkaline when metabolised but acidic in the mouth hence its good practice to rinse your mouth after drinking to eliminate residual acid. I have read that some find drinking lemon water regularly helps to reduce sugar cravings and calms digestion.

Suggest you keep a couple of lemon slices in the fridge so you can add it into your drinking water daily.

I recently received an e-mail message that read " Lemon Kills Cancer Cells - Surprising Benefits of Lemon" allegedly from Institute of Health Sciences In Baltimore. This is a hoax e-mail. The Institute of Health Sciences has issued a statement to say the content and information did not come from them. Although there are beneficial effects to lemon water this e-mail contained unproven, unsupported and significantly exaggerated claims as a cancer remedy and should not be considered a valid scientific report.

Scientific studies (2005 Science Daily and Medicinal use of Citrus published by University of Florida) however do indicate compounds in citrus, including lemon, have potential as anti- cancer agent. However it is not yet clear exactly how citrus will prove to be in preventing or fighting against cancer. It is also not accurate to say lemon is a viable alternative to traditional treatments like chemotheraphy. To be useful health advice needs to be valid, accurate and supported by credible medical sources. (www.hoax-slayer.com)

Mineral Water Bottles

Mineral Water Bottles

Have you ever wondered about the little numbers on the bottom of plastic products, usually surrounded by arrows? I presume many have not noticed it.  These are called the resin identification codes and were introduced in 1988 by the Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. to help with recycling.
Today, most single-use plastic water bottles are made out of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET or PETE), which is marked with a 1. Reusable plastic water bottles are usually made from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), which is marked with a 2; Polypropylene (PP), which is marked with a 5; or Polycarbonate (marked with a 7 or the letters "PC").

While it's tempting to just re-use that water bottle you bought at the gas station or supermarkets, you may want to toss it in the recycling bin instead. Chances are the bottle is made out of PET. While manufacturers such as the American Plastics Council have said that washing PET bottles with soap and water will keep the bottle safe, health and environmental groups are concerned that re-using these bottles leaches phthalates (endocrine disruptor), specifically DEHP (also called BEHP), into the water.

Among other concerns, an October 2008 study published in Environmental Research found that pregnant women exposed to high levels of DEHP gave birth to baby boys with smaller penises and undescended testes. Other studies have found that degraded PET bottles leach DEHA, which is known to cause liver problems and may be a carcinogen.

Safe use of plastic bottles
If you plan on washing and re-using your plastic water bottle, your best bet is to go for polyethylene (marked with a 2) or polypropylene (marked with a 5). However, you may want to consider foregoing a plastic bottle entirely, and choosing one made from glass or stainless steel.I highly recommend it.

Other Plastic Tips
In general, avoid exposing plastics to extreme heat, like in the dishwasher or microwave. Even if the plastic claims to be dishwasher or microwave safe, heating it to extreme levels will cause it to degrade, and could release chemicals into your food and drink. And don't fill your plastic water bottles with hot liquids, like tea or coffee, for the same reason. Remember not to re-use single-use plastic products, like water bottles, because they will quickly degrade.

Environment
Plastic water bottles are poorly biodegradable, so much of the landfill plastic is ultimately burned which releases unknown but large amount of toxic smoke into the atmosphere.

Personal Practise
I stop re-using single use water bottles (those with resin identification marked 1) and got rid of all similar bottles at home. I have filtered water at home and I fill my stainless steel water bottle everyday. I sometimes purchase mineral water from the store but will immediately discard it once I have finished. I try not to bring plastic water bottles home. I have also stop re-heating food in plastic containers in the microwave. No plastic containers are used to heat food on the stove, microwave or oven despite having the microwave safe label. It can be difficult to get your family accustomed to this change but its well worth the effort.

Lead in Lipsticks

I read a report by FDA on Lead in Lipsticks. FDA published lead levels on 400 lipsticks tested. Average lead amount found was 1.11 parts per million. The report was publish to assure the public that lead levels were still safe and within acceptable standards. So is this a concern to women folk and should we jump on the bandwagon to sought lead free alternatives?

Before we get all riled up, did you know lead can be found in the following
Air, Dust, Tap Water, Bottled water, Garden Soil, Chocolate, Coffee, Candy, Pottery etc

So basically just about everything contains lead. For example Chocolate absorbs lead from the environment during production, and there is a slight concern of mild lead poisoning for some types of chocolate. The average lead concentration of cocoa beans was a very low ≤ 0.5 nanogram/g, one of the lowest reported values for a natural food. Lead concentration of chocolate was as high as 70 ng/g for chocolate products and 230 ng/g for manufactured cocoa.

200,000 ng equal to 0.0002 grams or 2 milligrams is the WHO tolerable daily limit for lead consumption.

Lead is a toxic metal found in mineral colour pigments used to give cosmetics their colour. There are varying levels of purity when it comes to mineral pigments thus the wide range of lead levels detected in the FDA test results.
Top 20 contenders in this report are
-
     - Maybelline Color Sensational 125 Pink Petal  - 7.19 (parts per million – ppm)
-       - L’Oreal Colour Riche 410 Volcanic  - 7.00 ppm
-       - NARS Semi-Matte 1005 Red Lizard – 4.93 ppm
-       - Cover Girl Vibrant Hues Color Q580 Ruby Remix – 4.92 ppm
-       - NARS Semi-Matte 1009 Funny Face – 4.89ppm
-       - L’Oreal Colour Riche 165 Tickled Pink – 4.45
-       - L’Oreal Intensely Moisturizing Lip Colour 748 Heroic – 4.41ppm
-       - Cover Girl Continuous Colour 025 Warm Brick – 4.28 ppm
-       - Maybelline Color Sensational 475 Mauve Me – 4.23 ppm
-       - Stargazer Lipstick 103 – 4.12 ppm
-       - Stargazer Lipstick 103 Matte – 4.06 ppm
-       - Revlon 009 Fabulous Fig – 3.32 ppm
-       - Sonia Kashuk Luxury Lip Color 27 Mauvey – 3.12 ppm
-       - Avon Beyond Color 558 Mad for Mauve – 3.08 ppm
-       - L’Oreal Endless 530 Mauve Amour – 2.87 ppm
-       - Revlon ColorStay 375 Ripened Red – 2.84 ppm
-       - Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer Toffee – 2.81 ppm
-       - Revlon Super Lustrous Pearl 631 Luminous Pink – 2.81 ppm
-       - Sonia Kashuk Luxury Lip Color 27 Mauvy – 2.80 ppm
-       - Revlon Super Lustrous Pearl 643 Satin Plum – 2.77 ppm

I was surprise to see Burts Bees so high up on this list of contenders. I was disheartened as I recently shifted to their products especially the Shimmer Lipstick range. They never advocated that their products were certified organic or did not contain metals but they did give the impression that a lot of care and consideration was given to produce a range of personal care products that are 100% natural. I guess “natural” does not carry much weight in the cosmetics industry other than an advertising gimmick.

Lead Poisoning
Lead interferes with a variety of body processes and is toxic to many organs and tissues including the heartbonesintestineskidneys, and reproductive and nervous systems. It interferes with the development of the nervous system and is therefore particularly toxic to children, causing potentially permanent learning and behavior disorders. (Wikipedia Lead Poisoning)

Lead Free Cosmetic Brands
The following brands all have fabulous lip products that are free of toxins like lead. Ere Perez, Inika, Adorn, Youngblood, Alexami, Emani, RMS Beauty, Miessence, Dr Hauschka, NVEY ECO, Lavera, and Ilia (just to name a few). Kiss My Face also do a lip shimmer that is very similar to Burt's Bees but without the lead. I would love to hear from anyone who have tried these brands and if its available in Malaysia, Singapore or Australia.

Preventive Measures (www.epa.gov)
Simple steps like keeping your home clean and feeding your family a well-balanced diet will go a long way in preventing lead poisoning. You can lower the chances of exposure to lead in your home, both now and in the future, by taking these steps:
  • Use only cold water to prepare food and drinks.
  • Flush all water outlets used for drinking or food preparation.
  • Clean debris out of all outlet screens or aerators on faucets on a regular basis.
  • Keep your home clean and dust-free.
  • Wipe up any paint chips or visible dust with a wet sponge or rag. Clean dust around areas where there is friction and dust can be generated, such as doors, windows, and drawers.
  • Wash children's hands, bottles, pacifiers and toys often.
  • Teach children to wipe and remove their shoes and wash hands after playing outdoors.
  • Ensure that your family members eat well-balanced meals. Lead interferes with some of the body's basic functions. Our bodies can't tell the difference between lead and calcium, which is a mineral that strengthens bones. Children with healthy diets absorb less lead.
  • Make sure your contractor is Lead Safe Certified.

Conclusion
I am not saying go organic as most if not all natural lipsticks has not been tested for lead post manufacturing. If cosmetics company stop iron oxides and titanium oxides in cosmetics, which is doubtful will ever happen and switch to say fruit pigments to color cosmetics then we’re still going to contend with lead that can show-up in fruits and vegetables, either from soil it’s grown in or the lead that lands on it from environmental dust. Remember there is far more lead in bottled water than from lipsticks.
Nevertheless we should know what ingredients are used and how our lipsticks fair amongst  peers in the industry.

Unit of Measurement
"Parts per Million" is a way to quantify very low concentrations of substances. For example, 1 ppm is equivalent to 1 milligram of something per liter of liquid (abbreviated as mg/L) or 1 milligram of something per kilogram of solid substance (abbreviated as mg/kg).
In terms of percents, 1 ppm equals 0.0001 percent.
If a product has 20 ppm, that would mean it contains 20 milligrams of gluten (about 7 thousandths of an ounce, or 0.0007 ounces) per kilogram (2.2 pounds) or per liter.

The Story of Bottled Water (2010)

Who is the Fairest of them all

Asians love skin whitening personal care products. We seem to be obsessed with our fair skin. I never really noticed how much until my boyfriend pointed out that he couldn't find a personal care product without "whitening ingredient" This brings me back to the days when my mom tried to get me to use Fair and Lovely- India's number 1 fairness cream. As an indian child i was told that being fair is an asset!

Anyway I searched whitening creams on amazon and the results showed 1,158 products. You can get whitening cream for just about any type of skin and for any body part. Wow! we have come a long way from just Fair and Lovely. Now everyone from L'oreal to Estee Lauder makes whitening creams.

What baffles me is why do we need a whitening facial form for men?

Here are some known hazardous chemicals in skin lightening products.
Hydroquinone – The most common bleaching ingredient used in skin lightening products and is also found in film developing products. It is used in cosmetics, hair dyes, and medical preparations. Because it is considered a possible carcinogen (a substance that encourages cells to develop cancer) and has risks of causing respiratory issues, it is banned for use in cosmetics in the UK , EU, Japan and Canada, however, it is still allowed in the U.S.
Mercury – Many skin lightening creams have this chemical in them usually in the form of Mercury Chloride and Ammoniated Mercury, which is a carcinogenic. Toxic levels of mercury can lead to mercury poisoning which causes neurological and kidney damage, and may also lead to psychiatric disorders. In addition, it can lead to severe birth defects.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids – Commonly found in facial chemical peels, these are not ideal to be used without professional guidance. These should not be in anything you use at home regularly.
Arsenic – This is immediately thought of as “poison,” which is exactly what it is. Some skin lighteners do contain this as an ingredient.

If you want to know more here is a link to skin whitening creams banned due to its high level of mercury.
You may want to stay clear of these products.http://www.whiterskin.info/mercury-is-a-dangerous-skin-lightening-ingredient/#Listcreams

Summary of brands of products banned due to their content of Hydroquinone or Mercury.
  • Creams – Jaribu, Mekako, Amira, Tura, Yesako, Rico, Madonna, Mrembo, Shirley, Kiss, Uno21, Princess, Zarina, Envi, Viva, Ambi, Lolane, Nadinola, Glotone, Nindola, Claire, Mic, Tonight, Fulani, Clere, Binti, Butone, Malaika, Dear Heart, Miki, Crusader, Nish, Island Beauty, Malibu, Palmer’s, Care Plus, Topiclear, Carekako, Body Clear, A3 , Dream Successful, Symba, Ikb, Cleartone, Clear Essence, O’nyia, Elegance, Mr. Clere, Fairlady, Clear Touch, Ultime, Baraka, Peau Claire, Immediat Claire. Pimplex and New Shirley.
  • Lotions – Amira, A3 Cleartouch, Jaribu, A3 Lemon Skin, Kiss, Rico, Princess, Peau Claire, Clear Touch lotion, Fair & White body clearing milk, Sivoclair, Extra Clair, Precieux Treatment and Clear Essence milk.
  • Soaps – Movate, Mekako, Jaribu, Tura, Acura, Rico, Fair Lady, Elegance, Miki and Jambo.
  • Gels – Ultra Clear, Topiclear and Body Clear.
Finally whatever you decide please read all ingredients very carefully before applying any skin lightening cream or treatment bought from a non-professional outlet. Especially, if bought on the Internet and at local beauty parlours.

Personally I don't use any of these products. I accept my skin colour fair, tan or on the dark side it doesn't matter.

The Story of Cosmetics (2010)

Monavie

My dentist recommended Monavie on one of my regular visits. He said its a health juice packed with fruits high in anti-oxidants and works like a miracle! A bottle cost close to RM100. At the time i was desperate to try anything ( being just diagnosed with cancer) so i bought a bottle. A small cup twice a day.

The website states Monavie has the antioxidant capacity of approximately 13 servings of common fruits and vegetables in just four ounces.( http://www.monavie.com/). As i was drinking i noticed a thick residue at the bottom of the bottle. Well its imported and would have added preservatives to ensure longer shelf life.

You see I am all for healthy juices but without the additives or preservatives. Whats wrong with buying a juice extractors and making your own anti-oxidant drink. You could do carrot, celery and apple for instance. You could google and find combination of fruit juices that would deliver optimum amounts of anti-oxidants. I believe fresh juice is better than bottled juice unless your pressed for time and you want something fast without the hassle. The less we consume products packed in bottles and cans the better off we will be.

Further reading i discovered that one of the ingredients in Monavie is sodium benzoate which is a preservative that helps maintain a products freshness. Now Sodium benzoate and Vitamin C in Monavie reacts to form Benzene which is a known carcinogen. Below is an extract from Monavie website:
In the presence of trace amounts of certain metals, which act as catalysts, vitamin C can produce free radicals that convert benzoate into benzene. The FDA and World Health Organization have set a standard for benzene levels in water and that level is 5 parts per billion. MonaVie tests its MonaVie juices for benzene regularly, and we are always well below the FDA’s and World Health Organization’s acceptable levels for benzene.

OK so its within the acceptable standard levels however i firmly believe if we can reduce the consumption of preservatives we should endeavour to do so. What troubles me most is the number of young children drinking these "miracle" juices. I think we should educate our kids to drink fresh fruit juices and use Monavie as a last resort only.

Health Benefits of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin obtained from sun exposure, food and supplement. It is biologically inert and has to undergo two hydroxylation reactions to become active in the body.

The active form of vitamin D is called calcitriol and this promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from food in the gut and reabsorption of calcium in the kidneys – this increase flow of calcium in the bloodstream.

Overall Benefits of Vitamin D include:

  1. Crucial absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous especially for maintenance of healthy bones
  2. It is an immune system regulator and important way to arm the immune systems against common colds – University of Colorado, Denver School of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital and Children Hospital Boston
  3. It may reduce the risk of developing multiple sclerosis – Department of Neurology and director of the Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Center at Oregon Health and Science University
  4. Key to helping brain work well later in life  - Study of 3000 European Men between ages of 40 and 79
  5. Linked to maintaining a healthy body weight – Medical College Georgia
  6. Reduces the severity and frequency of asthma symptoms – Harvard Medical School
  7. Shown to reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis in women
  8. Vitamin D could be one of our body’s main protections against damage from low level radiation – New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
  9. Various studies shown people with adequate levels of D have significantly lower risk of developing cancer. D Deficiency is found prevalent in cancer patients regardless of nutritional status – Cancer Treatment Center of America. Visit Naturalnews.com for more on cancer prevention.

Food Sources

Concentrated food sources of vitamin D include salmon, sardines, cow’s and goat’s milk, shitake mushrooms and eggs.

Sun exposure

On average we require ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure at least twice a week (mid day) on face, arms, hands or back without sunscreen greater than 3 UV Index for adequate amounts of D3.

All of us in the tropics have no excuse to standing to stand in the sun a couple of minutes a day! Remember to my surprise, it's midday sun that has more ultra violet B radiation which produces Vitamin D. Remember the body self-regulates so will only take what it needs. The darker your skin the longer you need to stay in the sun,
Test on Vitamin D

There is also a test called 25-hydroxyvitamin D to determine if you have adequate levels of Vitamin D (excess or deficient). I have never heard of anyone taking this test here but I will consult my local physician to get his feedback on this.

Dosage

The Institute of Medicine, a group that uses scientific research to formulate public health policies, currently recommends an Adequate Intake, or AI, rather than a specific daily amount of vitamin D. The AI for vitamin D is 200 International Units for adults under age 50, 400 IU for those 51 to 70, and 600 IU for those age 71 and above

Consumption

Since Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, it is very difficult to absorb.

Vitamin D is best taken with a large fatty meal, as long as you are eating food that contains some sort of animal or vegetable fat. If you are eating a meal that has olive oils or fish oils, that works great as well.

Taking your Vitamin D liquid with a fatty meal will allow it to absorb quickly into your body. And without a doubt, a liquid form of Vitamin D is what you should be taking. Vitamin D3 liquid is a great option - 5 drops, or about 5,000 international units with a high fat meal should give you 100% absorption.

Fifteen facts you probably never knew about vitamin D and sunlight exposure.

Compiled by Mike Adams, based on an interview with Dr. Michael Holick, author, The UV Advantage)

Vitamin D prevents osteoporosis, depression, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and even effects diabetes and obesity. Vitamin D is perhaps the single most underrated nutrient in the world of nutrition. That's probably because it's free: your body makes it when sunlight touches your skin. Drug companies can't sell you sunlight, so there's no promotion of its health benefits. Truth is, most people don't know the real story on vitamin D and health. So here's an overview taken from an interview between Mike Adams and Dr. Michael Holick.
  1. Vitamin D is produced by your skin in response to exposure to ultraviolet radiation from natural sunlight.
  2. The healing rays of natural sunlight (that generate vitamin D in your skin) cannot penetrate glass. So you don't generate vitamin D when sitting in your car or home.
  3. It is nearly impossible to get adequate amounts of vitamin D from your diet. Sunlight exposure is the only reliable way to generate vitamin D in your own body.
  4. A person would have to drink ten tall glasses of vitamin D fortified milk each day just to get minimum levels of vitamin D into their diet.
  5. The further you live from the equator, the longer exposure you need to the sun in order to generate vitamin D. Canada, the UK and most U.S. states are far from the equator.
  6. People with dark skin pigmentation may need 20 - 30 times as much exposure to sunlight as fair-skinned people to generate the same amount of vitamin D. That's why prostate cancer is epidemic among black men -- it's a simple, but widespread, sunlight deficiency.
  7. Sufficient levels of vitamin D are crucial for calcium absorption in your intestines. Without sufficient vitamin D, your body cannot absorb calcium, rendering calcium supplements useless.
  8. Chronic vitamin D deficiency cannot be reversed overnight: it takes months of vitamin D supplementation and sunlight exposure to rebuild the body's bones and nervous system.
  9. Even weak sunscreens (SPF=8) block your body's ability to generate vitamin D by 95%. This is how sunscreen products actually cause disease -- by creating a critical vitamin deficiency in the body.
  10. It is impossible to generate too much vitamin D in your body from sunlight exposure: your body will self-regulate and only generate what it needs.
  11. If it hurts to press firmly on your sternum, you may be suffering from chronic vitamin D deficiency right now.
  12. Vitamin D is "activated" in your body by your kidneys and liver before it can be used.
  13. Having kidney disease or liver damage can greatly impair your body's ability to activate circulating vitamin D.
  14. The sunscreen industry doesn't want you to know that your body actually needs sunlight exposure because that realization would mean lower sales of sunscreen products.
  15. Even though vitamin D is one of the most powerful healing chemicals in your body, your body makes it absolutely free. No prescription required.

Personal Note

After my diagnosis my breast surgeon put me on Calcium(600mg) with Vitamin D (200 IU) supplements. I take it 3 times a week but I also ensure I get adequate sun exposure and diet rich in calcium and vitamin D.

Cancer and Sugar

The facts about sugar and cancer can be confusing. They are often presented in a way that is misleading and anxiety producing for those with cancer.

I have heard “sugar feeds cancer” which is simply not true. Sugar feeds every cell in the body. Our bodies need glucose for energy. Even if you cut every bit of sugar out of your body it will still make sugar from other sources like protein and fat.

If you eat a lot of sugar your body will produce a lot of insulin. Insulin is a natural substance that helps cell growth and this includes any possible cancer cells. Cells grow, divide and die and are replaced as part of a natural process of living.

Hence you don’t have to eliminate sugar from your diet but you can control amount of insulin produced by eating protein, fat and fiber together with sugar . This will help the body produce less insulin as it slows down the process of producing insulin

The following tips to help you find a healthy balance with your food choices

  1. Stick to naturally occurring sugars found in fruit and vegetables.
  2. Substitute white sugar for brown sugar or muscovado sugar
  3. Avoid concentrated sources of sugar in fruit juices and sodas
  4. Substitute milk chocolates with dark chocolate containing at least 80% cocoa.
  5. Limit your treats such as desserts with modest serving size
  6. Try to focus on whole, healthy and unprocessed foods
Most important point is sugar itself is not bad. Too much sugar, without enough fat, protein and fiber to balance it out, can cause our bodies to make too much insulin

Personal Experience

I have a sweet tooth. Of all the food and lifestyle changes I had to make after being diagnosed with breast cancer, this is the hardest for me. I try to substitute organic dark chocolate where I can but I still have some milk chocolate now and again. I have cut down desserts but I do have cake for tea sometimes (without the icing). I am not into fruit juices and sodas so that part is easy for me. I am more careful now and I am still not back to normal exercise routine which helps to burn calories. Soon I hope!

Not So Sexy : Secrets in Fragrances

I stumbled upon a website, safecosmetic.org ,and was intrigued by the report on fragrances detailed below:

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics commissioned an independent lab to test 17 fragrance products. Campaign partner Environmental Working Group assessed data from the tests and the product labels. The analysis reveals that the 17 products contained, on average:
  • Fourteen secret chemicals not listed on labels due to a loophole in federal law that allows companies to claim fragrances as trade secrets.
  • Ten sensitizing chemicals associated with allergic reactions such as asthma, wheezing, headaches and contact dermatitis.
  • Four hormone-disrupting chemicals linked to a range of health effects including sperm damage, thyroid disruption and cancer.
The majority of chemicals found in this report have never been assessed for safety by any publicly accountable agency, or by the cosmetics industry’s self-policing review panels.

Health Concerns
Allergies
Fragrance is now considered among the top five allergens in North America and European countries and is associated with a wide range of skin, eye and respiratory reactions. Repeated, cumulative exposure to chemical sensitizers like allergenic fragrance ingredients increases the chance that a person will develop allergic symptoms later in life. Our tests found an average of 10 chemical sensitizers in each fragrance product

Hormone disruption
Exposure to hormone disruptors has been linked to a wide range of health problems, including an increased risk of cancer, especially breast and prostate cancers; reproductive toxicity and effects on the developing fetus; and predisposition to metabolic disease such as thyroid problems or obesity. We found 12 ingredients with the potential to act as hormone disruptors in the products we tested
Chemicals in people
When sprayed or applied on the skin, many chemicals from perfumes, cosmetics and personal care products are inhaled or absorbed through the skin. A recent EWG study found synthetic musk chemicals Galaxolide and Tonalide in the umbilical cord blood of newborn infants; these chemicals were found in all but one fragrance analyzed for this study. Diethyl phthalate (DEP), which appeared in 12 of the 17 products we tested, has been found in 97 percent of Americans tested by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Where They Come From
Some perfume and cologne ingredients are found on product labels, but others hide under the secretive ingredient "fragrance." Due to this trade secrets loophole, nearly half of the ingredients in the products we tested were not listed on labels.
Below is a list of products tested and number of chemicals found in lab tests not listed on product labels.

Health risks from secret chemicals depend on the mixture in each product, the chemicals’ hazards, that amounts that absorb into the body and individual vulnerabilities to health
problems.
Whatever you decide it is good practise not to spray parfume directly onto your skin.
